How to Create Your Own Seashell Bath Rugs

For the nautical or ocean themed bathroom, seashell bath rugs are an absolute essential! These unique rugs really enhance the overall appeal of the room. It has been said that bath rugs are often the focal piece of many bathrooms. If you have a bathroom that you have decorated to represent the magnificent shores of a beautiful beach, or another theme that implements the decorations that reflect on the vast seas of the world, a rug that displays a shell, or more than one shell is appropriate and almost necessary in order to ensure that the overall décor is artistically created to captivate those that enter the room.

Here, I will share with you some easy steps on how to create your own seashell bath rugs. Now, keep in mind that this task may take a little bit of work and patience on your part, but the creative item that results makes it all worthwhile!

1. The first step to creating your own seashell bath rugs is to gather a few essential supplies. First, you will need to gather a lot of seashells from your local beach. The shells should be all shapes and sizes. Yes, that’s right! We are using REAL shells for this project! Next, you will want to purchase a caulking gun and some clear caulking. You will also want to gather a floor mat in the color of your choice for the project, as well as a clear gel mat that will be used as the top for the seashell bath rugs that you will be creating. If you like, you can purchase a small piece of carpet for the bottom of your project instead of a floor mat.

However, I have found that the caulking works better with a smooth surface such as the ones that floor mats have. It is also a good idea to purchase a bottle of glitter that carries the same color scheme as the bathroom has. If you have a blue bathroom, get blue glitter. This will be used to enhance the effect of the project that you are working on.

2. The first thing that you will want to do is lay the mat on the floor and go around the top outer corners of it with the clear caulking that you have purchased. This will form a wall type structure. You should allow this to dry so that it hardens.

3. Once the caulking has dried, it is now time to get out the seashells that you have set aside for the project. It is important to develop a design in your mind of how you want the shells to be placed. Take a tad of caulking and place it on the back of each shell and stick it on the mat. This will help ensure the shells stay in place.

4. Once all shells have been put into place, you should take the clear caulking and go around and in between every shell. This will create a gel-like appearance.

5. Once caulking is covering the entire visible surface of the mat, you will want to take your glitter and sprinkle it around the entire surface – specifically where the caulking is located.

6. Now, insert a new tube of clear caulking and cover the shells about a half an inch. This will ensure that the shells are protected from any weight placed on them.

7. You should sprinkle a little more of the glitter over the top of the shells once this is completed.

8. Now, you should wait 12-24 hours for this to dry.

9. Once this is dry, take some strong, clear adhesive and cover the entire surface thoroughly.

10. Now, you should take the clear gel mat and stick it on the surface and press firmly to ensure it is fitted and secure.

Now, you have a unique seashell bath rug for your bathroom. While this is not your typical rug, it is quite impressive and will accent the bathroom in a unique manner!
